Finally for today, Brian G. asks:

In all the presentations I've heard, no one has told me how to purchase shares online with a credit card. Can you do that?

There’s a good reason we haven’t discussed buying stocks with a credit card, Brian — it’s a terrible idea!

First, buying stocks requires you to open and fund a brokerage account, as described in our free Wealth Desk here.

If you do that with a credit card, you’re essentially taking out a loan. And if you don’t pay the balance at the end of the month, you’ll have to make minimum payments, plus interest.

Even with the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate cut, most credit cards still charge you much more than a typical loan. So if you’re trying to pay off your stock purchase over time, it’s likely your interest payments will eclipse any capital gains or dividends you collect.

That’s probably why I’m not aware of any brokerage firm that lets you fund your account with a credit card. Instead, they offer margin accounts. Among other things, a margin account lets you buy stock using a combination of your money and cash borrowed from the broker.

It can still be very risky if you don’t know what you’re doing… but at least the interest you’ll pay on the loan is usually a fraction of what credit cards charge.
